Mothering Sunday

The proper name for Mothers Day in the Britain is Mothering Sunday. This always on the fourth Sunday of Lent however as the dates vary as to when Easter and Lent fall the actual Sunday chosen to celebrate it may vary.
A couple of centuries ago it was considered important for people to return to their home or "mother" church at least once a year. Most Sundays in the year churchgoers would worship at their nearest parish or "daughter church". So each year in the middle of Lent, everyone would visit their "mother" church. This was the origins of 'Mothering Sunday'
In Victorian times, it was a day when children, mainly daughters, who had gone to work as domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother and families.
Today it is a day when children give presents, flowers, and cards to their mothers.

Today it is more often referred to as "Mother's Day" and it origin is distinctly different to Mothers Day in America although nowadays the sentiments are the same.
Sunday March 2nd was Mothers Day here. SC turned up with a lovely bunch of flowers and a card. Unfortunately I had gone to take youngest granddaughter home to her Mother and missed him. DJ hasn't kids, well except for Kobe is 'boy' and JA' daughter had gone home so we all went out for Sunday Lunch at the newly refurbished Gordon Arms. We had a traditional Sunday roast very nice and all the better for not having to cook it my self.

The rest of the day was spent quietly with the Sunday papers in the sunny conservatory. DJ has a new laptop so he move the majority of his music from my computer to his own. I should get a few gigabytes of space back now!!!!

Oh, I always forget your Mother's Day isn't the same as ours! (Ours is in May!) I'm glad to hear you had a nice day out -- you deserve it!
